Honorable Mention Wide Angle

Pedro Carrillo

Catch Me if you can

The Story:

During the season when vast numbers of sardines converge in Magdalena Bay, a truly uneventful day is a rarity. Yet finding a large bait ball unaccompanied by an equal presence of divers and snorkelers has become a challenge in its own right. It is equally uncommon to encounter one not under siege by billfish, bonito, sea lions, or circling birds. This image captures one of those exceptional moments: a solitary sea lion and a swirling mass of sardines engaged in what appears to be a synchronized dance, an intimate encounter whose quiet grace overwhelms the senses of the observer

Location:

South of Bahia Magdalena, BCS, Mexico

Equipment Used:

  • Camera – Nikon D810
  • Housing – Seacam
  • Strobe/light – Natural Light
  • Lens – Nikkor 8.0-15.0mm f/3,5-4,5 fisheye

Camera Settings:

  • ISO 2200
  • F/8
  • Shutter speed 1/500s
