Honorable Mention Black & White

Shunsuke Nakano

“Kinship”

The Story:

I encountered a superpod of around 300 pilot whales. What initially appeared to be a single vast group gradually revealed itself to be a gathering of many small family units, each consisting of fewer than ten individuals.

The two whales in the foreground share distinctive notches in their dorsal fins—features not seen on surrounding animals—suggesting a familial relationship.

Throughout the encounter, the whales remained closely grouped, swimming together as family units rather than dispersing within the larger superpod.

Location:

Off the coast of Roseau, Caribbean Sea, Dominica

Equipment Used:

  • Camera – Nikon D850
  • Housing – Nauticam
  • Strobe/light – Ambient Light
  • Lens – Nikon AF Nikkor 28-70mm with Nauticam WACP-1

Camera Settings:

  • ISO 800
  • F/7.1
  • Shutter speed 1/320s
