2nd Place Portrait
Imogen Manins
“Buddha’s Ear”
The Story:
A young Mosaic Leatherjacket shelters against a submerged Buddha statue near Rye pier. The statue forms part of a sparse artificial reef that extends away from the pier and has steadily degraded in recent years. In its worn surfaces a variety of marine life has taken hold, including octopus, sea stars, sponges and algae. On this occasion a Mosaic Leatherjacket used the structure for cover, relying on its camouflage to blend into the growing reef community. I couldn’t help but feel the serenity of the moment in this double portrait.
