Ambient Light Tutorials

Underwater photography and video tutorial series for shooting in ambient light
By Brent Durand

Ambient light underwater photography is a powerful way to portray our favorite underwater photo and video subjects. Shooting with ambient light only, excluding use of strobes or video lights, is a nice technique for shallow water, subjects beyond strobe/light reach, silhouettes, and other creative shots.

Shooting in ambient light is also a great solution for those who are just learning underwater photography as well as those who want to minimize gear for snorkeling or freediving. It also presents a chance to experiment with camera shooting modes, including aperture and shutter speed priority (we recommend manual for general underwater photo and video). The tutorials below cover all these aspects of shooting in ambient light.
