Snoot Photo Tutorials

Underwater photography and video tutorial series for shooting with snoots
By Brent Durand

Snoot lighting is a style of underwater photo and video that allows the shooter to precisely direct light into a narrow beam. This narrow beam opens up a world of dramatic light and shadow falloff, most often used for macro and supermacro photography.

The best uses of snoot lighting are to help make a subject pop from a distracting background, emphasize a portrait or body feature, minimize backscatter and introduce a feeling of drama into the composition.

Snoots can be used with underwater strobes or video lights. The tutorials below cover all aspects of shooting with underwater snoots.
