Ultramax Ultrapower UXDS-1 flash sensor

I just purchased a Ultramax Ultrapower UXDS-1. I have a Canon G-9.

I followed the included instructions, but the flash does not fire on any of the 5 pre-flash level settings when the G-9 is flashed at the sensor on the UXDS-1 flash head.

The unit flashes when the test button is pressed but not in response to my G-9 flash.

Am I doing something wrong or did I get a lemon?

Any help will be greatly appreciated, I'm leaving for Honduras in 2 days.

It isn't clear from the picture but is the flash sensor on the strobe in the front or in the back?

Are you using the fiber optic kit?
