Recently NAUI has created quite a stir when asking for photographs for their competition.
I have copied the rules photographers must agree to in order to enter below. As a photographer I find these rules unacceptable. Giving up ones rights is never smart.

NAUI Agreement: I understand that by submitting my photo to the NAUI - JUST DIVE Photo
Contest, NAUI Worldwide and its subsidiary companies aquire all rights of ownership
and thereby may use the photo for any publications, marketing programs including
print and the internet. No obligations, financial or otherwise, accrue to the previous
owner/submitter of the photo(s) or the people in the photo(s). Signed model release
forms for all recognizable individuals in the images must be included.

You save money by running a contest and getting images instead of having to pay for them. Netflix used prize economics recently.

At least they fully disclose it on their home page, so it's clear what people are giving up. Hopefully people will value their images enough not to give them away for free.

It's just not that competition either, as I have seen a number of similar rules for other comps here in my region (Australia / S.E. Asia) and you get the feeling they are doing it to build up their photo libaries for very minimal costs to themselves

Unfortunately there are so many photographers out there want to win comps so they can put it on their resume they are happily entering them without thinking of the consequences. I may never win any comps but at least I'll have control of my images.
