False Killer Whales Hunting

False Killer Whales Hunting Caught on Camera
By Chino Mendoza

False killer whales (Pseudorca) are uncommon to find everywhere. Seth Conae, a luck videographer was able to capture this epic event of false killer whales hunting.  He described it as a "National Geographic Moment" taking place in front of him,

He was diving of the waters of Kailua-Kona, about three miles of the coast when this happened.  “When that first false killer whale showed up, it was pretty amazing how close it got. It was surreal”. But the succeeding turn of events made it more amazing. A pod of 6 false killer whales came after the first one appeared, and seem to be hunting. “Seeing the mahi-mahi circle around the bag and watching the other ones come in like they were calling each other, and then them all working together to basically try to get their prey”.

“I think it was already in protective mode or hiding mode and trying to stick around that bag because I think it knew the false killers were in the area,” according to Conae.

Then one of the false killer whales slapped the 50-pound mahi-mahi of the water with its fluke.  One at a time, the false killer whales attacked the mahi-mahi until one of the bigger ones made the final kill.

On the video, you could hear Conae's excitement. “It’s hard to control yourself when you’re in the moment and you’re watching something that you can’t wrap your head around”.  This was truly an event to remember.
